GLOSSARY OF TERMS

The purpose of this glossary is to present as briefly as possible the thought that lies behind the most important aspects of the Tabernacle of the Heart as a Recycling Plant of the Holy Spirit. It is the prayer which is the prerequisite as to discern its mystery in the heart gradually clarified, first in the meditation, and later in the infused prayer as an efficacious contemplation. As the psychological effects of such a methodology simply “take place” in the soul deep within without the help of the discursive reason, Teresa’s of Avila formula mire que le mira (look at Him who looks at you) sheds best light upon such a devotion. The soul must consequently be passive in such a prayer: as a wax in the hands of the Holy Spirit. No attempt is made to be exhaustive in this context. St. Paul’s words sheds best light on such a prayer, To mysterion touto mega estin, “This is a great mystery, but I am applying it to Christ and the Church” (Ep 5. 31). Further information may be gathered by consulting the General index.

MEDITATION. The hidden meditation of the heart recommended in this work has nothing to do with logical deduction of the discursive reason.  The Greek word meleton or “meditation” sheds a light on the real nature of such a meditation. The word means to make something his own or to master something by constant repetition, to let it have effects on the soul. Such a meditation was practiced by the prophets of the Old Covenant as we can see in the Psalms, “How blessed is anyone . . . who delights in the law of Yahweh and murmurs his law day and night” (Ps 1. 1-2). This is a meditative prayer (see also Ps 63.6; 77.12 and 143.5). In Latin men used another word in ancient times of such a meditation, the verb ruminare. The word means literally speaking to suck a nourishment to oneself or to chew it. When we meditate in this way it means that we so to say chew the Word of God and suck its nourishment to us as a seed in the ground and digest it. The Greek verb meleton  means also a plan or an architectural drawing. As such the meaning of the word is also interesting in the construction of the Sanctuary in the heart, to meditate it in a contemplation [in the temple] which reveals it as a the Recycling Plant of the Holy Spirit. The fathers in the desert paid great importance to the “discipline” of the interior man or the higher self, a practice which they named the “interior” or “hidden” meditation or kripti meleti. This interior meditation aimed at the purity of the heart. All of these holy fathers agreed that an inner activity existed in every man which was continuously at work and revealed itself in the wishes and desires of the heart. This inner activity or life had been injured seriously by the original sin and thus functioned disorderly and demanded thus healing by divine intervention, that is, it was necessary to free the self from the enslavement of emotion, passions and thoughts. This healing consisted in the inner meditation and spiritual reading. When the soul begins to circulate in its meditation within the curtains of the Sanctuary and scrutinize its message she practices spiritual reading after having learnt the letters of the spiritual alphabet M.28.
