The Sanctuary as the
Soul's Fortress
In Psalm 91 we read following words, “No disaster can
overtake you, no plague come near your Tent” (v. 10). These words of
the Holy Spirit refers to souls seeking refuge in God as their
fortress. His Sanctuary is this fortress in the depths of the human
heart where He has “given his angels order about you to guard you
wherever you go” (Ps 91. 11). The soul is thus secure within the
shining white curtains of God's Sanctuary, “On your walls, Jerusalem. I
have posted watchmen; they will never fall silent, day or night” (Is
62. 6). It is secure and thus the Holy Spirit urges the soul to raise
the Sanctuary in her heart, “Extend the curtains of your home, do not
hold back. Lengthen your ropes, make your Tent pegs firm” (Is 54. 2).
The Sanctuary is thus a secure home for the soul, “as a home that is
secure, a Tent not to be moved, none of its tent pegs ever to be pulled
out, none of its guy ropes ever to be broken” (Is 33. 20). In the
common and Royal Priesthood of the New Covenant this means to be
grounded in the holy tradition of the one and true apostolic faith as
we have received it from the fathers and mothers of the Church and God
doesn't restrict Himself neither to the West or East in this context.
