BRIEF HISTORY
Hospicio de San Jose is HOME to more than three hundred
people of varied age and needs from cradle to twilight years.
Two-thirds of its population, abandoned by their families, seek for
temporary/permanent shelter. Since its foundation in October 1778
Hospicio de San Jose has been attending to the urgent needs of indigent
and mentally/physically handicapped. Responding to the needs of the
poor for education, a formal education instruction is being offered.
Challenged by the realities around Hospicio a formalized outreach
program was organized favouring the slum areas of Quiapo. San Miguel
and other diversified areas sharing with them its facilities, material
resources and most especially its Catholic Education.
From
its foundation to the
present, Hospicio has been recognized as a Catholic Welfare
Institution.
Since 1865 it has been managed by the Daughters of Charity of St.
Vincent
de Paul and presently governed by a Board of Directors under the
chairmanship
of the Archbishop of Manila.
VISION/MISSION
Hospicio
de San Jose, as a Catholic Welfare Institution, envisions a transformed
and empowered church of the poor where the young and elderly coming
from diversified and marginalized families and communities find a HOME.
Sensitive to the signs of the times and responsive to the call of the
Church, Hospicio de San Jose is committed to serve the abandoned young
and old, helping them experience quality life and become agents of
Social Transformation.
OBJECTIVES
To provide wholistic programs for
Total Human Development and Christian Values Formation designed for
empowerment of personnel and clientele group.
To
design, develop and sustain innovative programs, services and
curriculum to improve the quality of life of the poor.
To
work for the promotion
of the integrity of God's creation especially on issues dealing with
the
conversion, renewal and social transformation of the environment.
To
provide a welcoming family to children and elderly deprived of their
own.
PROGRAMS
AREAS
RESIDENTIAL CARE
Abandoned,
orphan
neglected, abused, special children/youth (mentally/physically
handicapped) and elderly people are provided with a holistic approach
for family life formation. Included are children/youth with parents for
temporary shelter.
ADOPTION
A
socico-legal process of providing a permanent family to a child whose
parents have voluntarily relinquished parental authority over the
child. It is for children who cannot be reared by their biological
parents and who need and can benefit from
new and permanent family ties.
EDUCATION
Basic
and
Special Education is provided to children and youth. The program also
extends to its services to indigent children living within the vicinity
of die institution.
PHYSICAL THERAPY AND REHABILITATION
PROGRAM
These
are
rehabilitation and developmental services to our Clientele,
specifically, the children/youth with special needs and Elderlies,
through physical and occupational therapy geared towards the attainment
of their fullest physical, mental, social, vocational and economic
usefulness of which they are capable.
CRISIS
INTERVENTION
(HSJ -Tahan Center)
A twenty-four continuous confidential
service geared toward protecting, caring for, rehabilitating
intervening in crisis situations such as
• run-away children/youth
• stranded individuals
• battered wives 1 sexually abused
children/youth
COMMUNITY OUTREACH
Provides
a comprehensive
program to children of indigent families living within the areas of the
institution.
It ensures education, nutrition, socio-cultural growth, trainings and
values
formation that would strengthen family life and community development.
PASTORAL CARE
Provides
opportunity for the residents to experience richness in their
spiritual, socio-cultural aspects through celebration, catechesis,
community building and human formation, and to promote ecological
awareness and social consciousness.
